Da Nang Overview

Cursory things about Da Nang history

In 1306, Princess Huyen Tran (Dai Viet) got married with Che Man (Champa) – Dai Viet obtained a large area by this marriage – Thuan Hoa and Hoa Chau (Chau O and Chau Ly). Da Nang belonged to Hoa Chau at that time.

After being merged into Dai Viet (1306 – 1471), the area from Hai Van hill to the South was still wild, used to be robbed, and pestered. It then was in peace by the great battle leaded by King Le Thanh Ton (1470). The territory of Dai Viet was enlarged to Mui Nay (between Phu Yen province and Khanh Hoa province) and the area was changed from waste land into cultivated land. In June of the year 1471, King Le Thanh Ton created Thua Tuyen Quang Nam province. Da Nang still belonged to Thua Tuyen Thuan Hoa at that time. In 1602, Lord Nguyen Hoang built a palace in Cau Huc district (known as Duy Xuyen district, Quang Nam province at the moment). He delegated Nguyen Phuc Nguyen – Lord Sai to govern this area.

In 1604, Dien Ban was merged into Quang Nam and was settled to be Dien Ban citadel governing 5 districts: Tan Phu, Yen Nong, Hoa Vang, Dien Khanh, and Phu Chau. At that time, Da Nang belonged to Hoa Vang district. In the age of Lord Nguyens, Hoa Vang was changed to be cultivated land and very prosperous; many foreign entrepreneurs used to trade in a great number. In mid of the 16th century, Hoi An was a harbour, a crowded central trading, while Da Nang was just a transportation and ships-repairing centre.

Until the beginning of the 17th century, when the European ships development technology had advanced to a high level to build large capacity ships which were able to enter the Da Nang bay. Therefore, Da Nang appeared to be a new trading centre which was running trading mostly between Dang Trong and the Europe.

In 1858, the troop of France and Spain fired to invade Vietnam via the Da Nang bay. After invading our country, in 1889, “Governor-General of Indo-China (pre-1945)” figured out a decree to create Tourane town (Da Nang) belonging to Quang Nam province, and ranked as the level-two town. This was valid until September 19th, 1905, Da Nang was separated from Quang Nam province to found an independent administration unit including 19 districts. Tourane was built by French government as a European-like town with advanced infrastructure, and was one of the biggest trading centres compared with Hai Phong and Sai Gon.

The town was renamed by the name of “Patriot Thai Phien” after the success of the August Revolution (The August revolution) in 1945.

The French government had to hand Da Nang to the Bao Dai government in 1950.

In June of 1965, the American sea troops (Marines) landed on Da Nang and settled there a big military centre (Military basic). American government built airport, harbour, roads for their invading craving.

At 14 o’clock on March 29th, 1975, Da Nang was completely emancipated. On October 10th, 1975, “People's committee of The revolution averge part region” issued a decision numbered 119/QD to merge Quang Nam province with the special zone Quang Da to be Quang Nam – Da Nang province. On August 30th, 1977, the Government committee issued a decree numbered 228-CP to merge districts I, II, and III of Quang Nam – Da Nang to be a united administration named Da Nang city.

At the 10th meeting on November 06th, 1996, the 9th Congress announced a resolution to separate Quang Nam – Da Nang province to be Quang Nam province and Da Nang city “City belong directly to Central”.

On July 15th, 2003, Da Nang city was consecrated as a city in level one, which brings Da Nang city many new opportunities to advance to be a big economy centre of the Middle.
